PHS Senior Brian Furey Named as Presidential Scholar Candidate
Brian Furey, Portland High School's 2009 valedictorian and senior class president, has been selected as a candidate for the United States Presidential Scholars Program. He is one of about 40 students in Maine being considered for the program. Presidential
Scholars are chosen on the basis of academic or artistic achievement, personal characteristics, leadership and service activities.
Furey is captain of Portland High's baseball and soccer teams and a National Merit Semifinalist. For the past two years, he has been the top scorer on the school's math team. He was elected president of his class all four years at Portland High.
A total of about 3,000 candidates nationwide have been named as candidates for the Presidential Scholars Program. The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars will select a maximum of 141
students in April to participate in the program. Scholars receive an expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. to meet with government officials, educators, artists, scientists and other accomplished people, and they are honored at a ceremony sponsored by the White House.
PHS ELL (English Language Learners)
PHS has traditionally had a large ELL population (also known as ESL, or English as a Second Language.) There are now 367 language minority PHS students (40% of the total population.) 248 ELL students are currently at a level required by the state to take the mandated ACCESS test. ELL students arrive with varying degrees of literacy. Some have been in school in their country of origin, or in another country enroute to the United States. Many have had limited or no access to schooling. Their placement in the ELL program at Portland High depends on their English ability exhibited in an entry placement exam. The students are then tested twice yearly to ensure they continue to learn at the appropriate level. Recently, Portland High has created the Intensive Literacy Academy for Newcomers and Beginners who arrive with minimal or no native or English literacy.
The early PHS ESL students in the '80's hailed mostly from Cambodia and Vietnam; today PHS enrolls 105 Asian/Pacific Islanders; 257 African/African Americans; 45 Hispanics, with approximately 600 Caucasians.
Many languages can be heard in PHS' halls, cafeteria and classrooms; the largest language groups are Acholi, Amharic, Arabic, ASL, Cantonese, Dinka, Farsi, French, Khmer, Kinyarwanda, Lingala, Luo, Mandarin, Persian, Punjabi, Romanian, Russian, Serbo-Croatian, Somali, Spanish, Swahili, Tagalog, Thai, Tigrinian, Urdu, and Vietnamese. Students are often versant in more localized, native languages as well.
A Look Back: Portland High in the 30's
[Note: Peter Gribbin, PHS' eminence grise, historian and former teacher, has graciously provided this brief history.]
The Great Depression of the 1930's had its' effects upon PHS, as it did upon the country as a whole. Most noticeable was the school population. Economic hard times, this time with record-breaking unemployment, once again kept children in the schools. By 1933 enrollment was over the 2,000 mark, and it remained there until the early 1940's.
It is interesting to contrast the 1930's with the enrollment figures of a century earlier. In the 1830's, the situation was the reverse. The prosperity of the 1830's had resulted in a slump in attendance to the point where only 54 students were at final exams in the summer of 1833. The 1833 annual report attributed this to "arising from their being taken from school.... to serve as apprentices to mechanics and merchants, and in consequence of the increased activity of business."
The student body of more than 2000 during the Great Depression has remained the high point of attendance in PHS history. Although there were larger graduating classes in the mid-60's, at that time PHS was a 3-year school, and the total enrollment never reached 2,000. Naturally, the school's budget felt the severe pinch of that great economic crisis of the 1930's. Mr. Lowe's annual report in 1933 noted that there had been a cutting of textbooks and supplies, but stressed that the comprehensive program of studies remained intact. He also reported that school activities continued without any serious interruption. The huge, Depression-swelled student body led to incredibly large numbers being involved in extracurricular activities. For example, in 1934, there were 200 boys trying out for football, 80 candidates for the cheering squad, 73 hopefuls for the debate team, and 200 members in the girls' chorus.
Another development of the 1930's was the adoption of the Bulldog as the PHS mascot. The first appearance of a bulldog in a PHS publication was in the 1933 "High Lights." By the end of the thirties, the PHS teams were referred to as "The Bulldogs."
Unfortunately, the Depression had its damaging effects as well. The "Racquet", which had been published for over forty years, was unable to survive the hard times of the 1930's.
